Gamma Communications Takeover: What Does It Mean for VoIP Resellers?

The UK telecoms market is watching developments at Gamma Communications closely. While Gamma has now agreed to a recommended £1.02 billion takeover by private equity firm Epiris, the wider conversation around consolidation, competition, and reseller choice is far from over. For technology resellers that rely on wholesale partners to deliver services, the wider question is this: How dependent should you be on a single supplier?

A Quick Catch-Up

If you’re now catching up, here’s all you need to know.

Gamma Communications initially confirmed preliminary takeover discussions with private equity firm Waterland, with Giacom acting in concert with Waterland. Under that proposal, Giacom could have acquired parts of Gamma, including its UK indirect business, which serves thousands of resellers.

This situation has since changed, with Gamma agreeing to a recommended £1.02 billion takeover by private equity firm Epiris. Gamma’s board has recommended the offer, although Waterland still has until 18th September 2026 to decide whether to make a competing offer. This means there could still be further developments.

While the outcome remains uncertain, the situation has reignited conversations about consolidation in the telecoms channel. Whenever large providers merge or are acquired, there is often concern that resellers could ultimately have fewer independent wholesale options to choose from.

Why does this matter to you as a reseller?

If you are a technology reseller, your wholesale relationships are an important part of your business.

You may have the direct relationship with your customer, but behind the scenes, you’re relying on a wholesale provider for the VoIP platform, SIP, broadband or connectivity you’re providing.

This means that when major providers are involved in potential takeovers or mergers, it’s understandable that you might start asking questions like ‘What happens to pricing?’ or ‘Will there be fewer wholesale options available?’

While no immediate changes have been announced, situations like this naturally prompt questions around future pricing, partner programmes, support structures and commercial commitments. We don’t yet know what the outcome will mean for partners, but it does highlight the value of having multiple wholesale relationships.

Should you have multiple wholesale partners?

Having another wholesale relationship doesn’t mean moving your customers away from your existing provider. It’s about having another option available when the right opportunity comes around.

Different wholesale platforms suit different customers. Pricing, features, support and commercial terms can all vary, so having multiple relationships gives you more flexibility to choose the right solution for each customer. And if something does change with your primary supplier, you already have a relationship in place.

More choice = more control

Competition gives resellers choice, and choice gives you more control over what you can offer your customers. Having multiple partners can mean greater flexibility around services and pricing, less reliance on one provider and more options when customer requirements change.

The Value of Having an Alternative Wholesale Partner

The Gamma story is still developing, and nobody yet knows what the long-term outcome will look like for partners. What it does highlight, however, is the importance of maintaining choice.

Having relationships with multiple wholesale providers isn’t about replacing existing partnerships. It’s about giving your business more options and control over the solutions you can offer customers.
